WELCOME TO NEW ORLEANS - THE FRENCH QUARTER
Often called the Crown Jewel of New Orleans, the French Quarter is one of NOLA's most historic neighborhoods.
Today the French Quarter of New Orleans is among the most instantly recognizable half-square miles in the world and is synonymous with the city as a whole. It is also commonly called the Vieux Carré – a term meaning “Old Square” in French, and coined around the 1890s when the Quarter was evolving into a tourist destination.
The French Quarter is located on the banks of the Mississippi River where New Orleans was established by the French in 1718. The site was selected not only because the riverfront is relatively high amid low-lying swampland, but because of its proximity to Lake Pontchartrain which, via Bayou St. John, provided a safer shortcut than the Mississippi for shipping.
EVENT IN-CHARACTER VENUES
By Night Studios and Reverie Studios acknowledge and recognize the rich and diverse cultural history of New Orleans as well as the fact that much of the city–including many of the Saturnalia event venues–were built and maintained by enslaved Africans on land that had been originally inhabited by the Chitimacha. As part of this acknowledgement, we are working to ensure that our use of these venues are given care and consideration for the lives of those who were forced to inhabit these spaces against their will. As part of this acknowledgement we will be providing a limited amount of compensated tickets to Black and Indigenous participants. In addition, we are also working with our venues to ensure that full context and history of the spaces are made available in order to honor the legacy of those who were forced to build our event locations.
